Procedure

When someone wants me to make a portrait, ideally I want to meet the person to be portrayed in his or her place. I want to spend some time in the home situation to see what his or her place looks like. To get the feel of the place so to speak. Then I want to photograph what I see to record what I see and feel in order to have enough material to study on. After this phase a plan of composition and the general atmosphere I want to create emerge. During this study I discribe what I see in a primary design so You as a client can allready get a glimpse of what can be.

A live posing
Posing is sometimes a neccesary next step. Preferably in my atelier. Small children aren't easy subjects for this way of working. If that's the case I use my camera as a way to get basic material for the painting.

Creating an image from memory
In the case of a deceased person, the source material are pictures and memories of next of kin. A picture will forme itself when essential information is given me about your relative.
Still the picture that emerges is an interpretation of what I see and what is told to me. The interpretation can be enriched in contact with You as a client. You can provide me with as much information as you're willing to give about your relative's personality and the atmosphere that fitted him or her. Going into your memory of your relative can be sometimes intensive but worth the trouble because it gives me a clearer picture about who he or she could have been.

Artists liberty
It's also possible to leave to me what kind of painting it's going to be. This is what I call a 'free portrait commission'.

Timeline in creation as a process or a deadline
The duration of the creation process I cannot allways predict. Unless there is a deadline. The process ends at the time when the painting has become a personality in it's own right.

What this picture is worth to you
Obviously before commissioning you will want to know the amount of money you're willing to pay for the portrait. Among other things the amount depends on the dimensions of the painting and techniques involved.

If you want I'll make an estimate for you if you're serious in commissioning me.
